InterÂview with CatherÂine Yee: OthÂerÂwise known as KathÂleen Lawrence
What inspired you to begin writÂing? What authors espeÂcialÂly influÂenced you?
A litÂtle voice whisÂpered in my ear durÂing my dreams. It was Clare of BatÂtered Wings. She wantÂed her stoÂry told. She was one perÂsisÂtent lady. She woke me up many nights and I lay there in the dark putting her stoÂry togethÂer, then spent my days researchÂing W.A.S.P. and othÂer female pilots from the WWII era.
O. HenÂry, Tony HillerÂman, Agatha Christie and a ton of othÂer authors have influÂenced me through the years. I think I love Agatha Christie the best.
What genÂres do you write in? What attractÂed you to that type of fiction?
Here’s the probÂlem with that, I write whatÂevÂer strikes me which is why I have writÂten a war stoÂry, BatÂtered Wings, pubÂlished; a spy stoÂry, Spy Doc, to be released someÂtime in SepÂtemÂber and just finÂished a ghost stoÂry, NumÂber Five DunÂning MeadÂow Lane. On the back burnÂer is a NaNoWÂriMo novÂel about life in a manÂuÂfacÂturÂing plant, called ProdÂuct Line 551. It’s finÂished but in very rough shape. I write for the fun of it.
Do you outÂline, “wing it,” or someÂthing in between?
I outÂline my stoÂries and then I fill in. SomeÂtimes I already have the endÂing in mind and then plot out the rest of the stoÂry. That’s probÂaÂbly a goofy way to do it but it works for me.
What is your latÂest or next-forthÂcomÂing book (or both)?
My next book to be pubÂlished by Whiskey Creek is Spy Doc. It’s a difÂferÂent type of spy stoÂry. I like to think of it as genÂtle spy stoÂry. It comes out in SepÂtemÂber of this year.
What are you workÂing on now?
I’ve just finÂished writÂing NumÂber Five DunÂning MeadÂow Lane, a ghost stoÂry. It’s cenÂtered here in North CarÂoliÂna in a litÂtle town near the mounÂtains. We have so many beauÂtiÂful VicÂtoÂriÂan homes here in North CarÂoliÂna that are being lovÂingÂly restored and I enviÂsioned one of them fightÂing back. lol My othÂer project is reworkÂing the othÂer finÂished novÂel and putting all my short stoÂries into an antholÂoÂgy. My short stoÂries go across the board also.
What advice would you give to aspirÂing writers?
LisÂten to the inner you and write what pleasÂes you. You’ll find your niche soonÂer or latÂer. If someÂthing inspires you, write about it. If you don’t like what you’ve done, junk it but put it on paper first and give it a seriÂous look.
What’s your webÂsite URL? Do you have a blog? Where else can we find you on the web? I have a derelict webÂsite t
