Interview with Catherine Yee: Otherwise known as Kathleen Lawrence
What inspired you to begin writing? What authors especially influenced you?
A little voice whispered in my ear during my dreams. It was Clare of Battered Wings. She wanted her story told. She was one persistent lady. She woke me up many nights and I lay there in the dark putting her story together, then spent my days researching W.A.S.P. and other female pilots from the WWII era.
O. Henry, Tony Hillerman, Agatha Christie and a ton of other authors have influenced me through the years. I think I love Agatha Christie the best.
What genres do you write in? What attracted you to that type of fiction?
Here’s the problem with that, I write whatever strikes me which is why I have written a war story, Battered Wings, published; a spy story, Spy Doc, to be released sometime in September and just finished a ghost story, Number Five Dunning Meadow Lane. On the back burner is a NaNoWriMo novel about life in a manufacturing plant, called Product Line 551. It’s finished but in very rough shape. I write for the fun of it.
Do you outline, “wing it,” or something in between?
I outline my stories and then I fill in. Sometimes I already have the ending in mind and then plot out the rest of the story. That’s probably a goofy way to do it but it works for me.
What is your latest or next-forthcoming book (or both)?
My next book to be published by Whiskey Creek is Spy Doc. It’s a different type of spy story. I like to think of it as gentle spy story. It comes out in September of this year.
What are you working on now?
I’ve just finished writing Number Five Dunning Meadow Lane, a ghost story. It’s centered here in North Carolina in a little town near the mountains. We have so many beautiful Victorian homes here in North Carolina that are being lovingly restored and I envisioned one of them fighting back. lol My other project is reworking the other finished novel and putting all my short stories into an anthology. My short stories go across the board also.
What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Listen to the inner you and write what pleases you. You’ll find your niche sooner or later. If something inspires you, write about it. If you don’t like what you’ve done, junk it but put it on paper first and give it a serious look.
What’s your website URL? Do you have a blog? Where else can we find you on the web? I have a derelict website t
